Navigating Wellbeing: When is Trauma not a Trauma?

Navigating Wellbeing: When is Trauma not a Trauma?

For an event to be a Trauma, a UDIN* moment is required.  This refers to an event that is:

  • Unexpected
  • Dramatic
  • Isolating
  • No Strategy

If one of these is missing, it will still be upsetting or frightening at the time; but not traumatic.  This applies to both adult and childhood trauma.

A UDIN moment tears the very fabric of a person’s world apart.  It can rip up trust, safety, relationships, things we hold true and squash values we thought were sacred.  If you think of the damage that sudden divorce or redundancy can do to a person, or that child abuse can do to a child, you’ll get the idea.  How intense that tear is relies on the intensity of the event and the resilience of the person.

Until the UDIN moment is resolved and released, it slumbers quietly in the body, blocking neurological pathways.  This means that although you may be doing well in life, the trauma is an undercurrent that’s always with you and can erupt without warning into behavioural patterns or health conditions such as chronic pain or ME.

Releasing Trauma Doesn’t Have To Be Traumatic.  The hardest part can be acknowledging what happened to you, forgiving yourself for not doing more at the time, accepting it wasn’t your fault and gaining freedom.
