Helping teams to act with Commitment and Purpose - The Mobius

Helping teams to act with Commitment and Purpose…

When I work with teams that are stuck on unresolved issues, or who have a complex problem to address, I find the Mobius a useful stand alone process, as well as one that links to MBTI if the team is already familiar with it.  It really provides a process to get the team to committed and purposeful action.

MOBIUS is based on the concept that internal and external dialogues need to be aligned before the team can commit and move forwards.  It is a great road map process which also can be linked to type tools like the MBTI (Myers Briggs Type Indicator).  For those of you familiar with MBTI I have included the references to the types.

MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING (F):  Team takes time out to really listen to what it is like for the all the people involved.  Spending time here, exploring and listening to other’s views and needs, may seem like it slows the process down, but new possibilities emerge for moving forward.

POSSIBILITIES (N): As the team listens it begins to generate new possibilities for a way forwards.  These can be ‘brainstormed’ until a mutually agreeable idea emerges (usually this is fairly quick if Mutual Understanding is conducted correctly).

COMMITMENT: (J) This cannot be faked.  It is that magical ‘aha’ moment where you realise you have a workable solution that all parties can sign up to.

ABILITIES – The team analyses (T) the resources that are at their disposal to make their agreed action take place.  All too often teams fail because they move directly from possibilities to abilities without taking stock of commitment.

RESPONSIBILITIES (S) – this is when jobs are allocated and deadlines agreed.  It is the detailed planning stage where things actually start to get done.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT (P) – this is a phase most team forget to include.  It is the stage where success is celebrated and a project review takes place to establish if anything else should be done and what learning has occurred.  It is then the space where next steps are identified.
