RESPECT the Procurement Function

RESPECT the Procurement Function

When last did you get up on a morning buzzing with excitement to have another day to make great things happen for yourself, your Procurement function and your organization? I guess a lot of us would not be able to remember a day or have a very faint memory of ever feeling that way. Why is that do you think?

I am certain that many of us have fallen into Procurement by accident. I don’t think many a four-year old declares “when I grow up, I want to become a Procurement professional” and yet there are thousands in this profession. Some by accident and others, not.

Being a Procurement Professional is not for the faint-hearted as there are few organizations and stakeholders who welcome us with open arms and there’s always a Smart Alec who think they can do the job better than us. Why then remain in this function? There is nothing deterministic about staying in this often-times difficult profession unless of course it is the only one you could get. Is this perhaps the reason why you are not vibrating with energy to rush out the door to your job and deliver, deliver, deliver? If you have made a conscious decision to stay and practice this amazing profession, or even if the decision were made for you, it behoves you today to own that decision, make Procurement your calling, educate yourself on its aspects and share your love and enthusiasm for delivering a first class Procurement function with your colleagues, your stakeholders and everyone you meet.
