Managers are in a strong position to promote wellbeing and positive mental health of their teams. Being a specialist in mental health or having therapist and counsellor qualifications is NOT expected, however, being able to recognise early signs of distress and signpost to appropriate support can be very helpful

How can managers play a vital role in creating a positive and supportive work environment:

  1. Promote open communication: Encourage open and honest communication with team members. Create a safe space where employees feel comfortable discussing their mental health concerns, challenges, and stressors. Actively listen to their concerns and offer support and understanding.

  2. Raise awareness and reduce stigma: Educate managers about mental health issues, including common symptoms, challenges, and available resources. Foster a culture that destigmatizes mental health by promoting understanding and acceptance.

  3. Walk the Talk: Demonstrate healthy work habits and self-care practices. Encourage breaks, vacations, and time off when needed. Model a balanced approach to work and life. When managers prioritize their own mental health, it sets a positive example for the team.

  4. Regular check-ins: Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with employees to check on their well-being and discuss any challenges they may be facing. Show genuine interest and offer support. Be proactive in identifying signs of distress or burnout and address them promptly.

  5. Collaborate with HR and support services: Work closely with the human resources department to understand what support services are available to your team. Provide information about employee assistance programs, counseling services, or other mental health support available within or outside the organization. Encourage employees to seek help when needed.

To encourage a culture that values mental health and wellbeing - managers have a crucial role. Increasing awareness in this area can only be a good thing and help to navigate conversations and actions with confidence.
