The Value of Values
I’m delighted to have presented the award for the best Business Culture Team at the Business Culture Awards ceremony last Tuesday evening, a brilliant event! - and to declare the winner as UST, a Digital Technology company, and their Office of Values and Culture team.
So what is the Business Culture Team Award for you may ask?
Well it’s recognising the power of teams and their passion and commitment to creating a unique workplace that has the confidence of all who work there. Judges also look at how innovation teams have been in working across boundaries and making a significant contribution to the organisation’s achievements.
Culture for me is all about ‘how’ you do what you do. It’s the values you work by, the guiding principles that underpin everything you do. It’s the way you work together, day by day. Rather than a plaque on the wall that gets ignored or forgotten.
And it all starts with a clear purpose as to why you do what you do.
One company I worked with had a saying ‘right results, right way’ and actually rewarded people 50% on each measure. The right results were the organisational goals, the right way was the values of the business and the way you were expected to go about achieving those goals. One without the other is not enough, it’s a case of ‘both and’.
I’m hearing a lot of talk at the moment about the scarcity of great talent. Creating a great place to work, a culture where people thrive and perform at their best, is going to be critical I believe in attracting the best people as we move forward. Which in turn will enable your business to grow, thrive and deliver!
