"The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it"
Robert Swan
I was very kindly offered an invitation from Chris Birks (4 Corners Design) to the OWL Network Meeting (Ormskirk and West Lancs Business Focus) today. It was great to see so many West Lancashire Business Owners there to have the opportunity to meet and chat in one place at a mutual time.
In addition to having the opportunity to learn about the fabulous businesses in West Lancashire, we had the extra treat of being introduced to a lovely inspiring and motivating lady Rosie Cooper, MP. I have to admit I am not the brightest button when it comes to politics and tend to keep myself to myself when it comes to having a conversation about elections, politicians and the latest democracy but this lady hit a chord with me.
Rosie described in detail how she came to where she was today but more importantly, she expressed her sincere openness to speak to her constituents within West Lancashire. Rosie was so passionate about fighting for justice and not taking no for an answer.
I have always thought of myself as a positive leader and during my time in management I always prided myself in being approachable and considered alternative ways of working when suggested. However, in the NHS this is quite difficult due to the culture of maybe always doing what has been done. On reflection, after today, I don't think I fought enough against the system and that may have been due to the organisation that I was in and again the culture or just the fear of standing out from the crowd.
There were many things I took away from her speech today but the one main thing that will stick with me and I will learn from as I continue in this journey of managing my own business is Rosie stated that colleagues have said to her in the past "saying no to you is just delaying saying yes!". What fabulous words of a leader who is fighting our corner for West Lancashire, residents, visitors and business owners.
I would like to thank Rosie Cooper and also OWL for putting on such fabulous morning. I will now go forth and challenge!
Until Next time
Bernice
